The Story of KMAC: From Crafts to Contemporary Art
How the Museum Started
The museum first opened its doors in 1981. It was originally called the Kentucky Art and Craft Foundation. Its purpose was to celebrate and preserve the rich history of crafts in Kentucky. Soon, it began collecting unique American Folk Art from the region.
A New Home and New Name
In 2001, the museum moved to its current location. This new home is a beautiful four-story building with a historic cast iron design. When it moved, the museum changed its name to the Kentucky Museum of Art and Craft. It continued to focus on art made by modern Kentucky artists. The new building offered much more space for art shows and educational programs.
Becoming KMAC Contemporary Art Museum
The museum closed for about a year in 2015 for a big renovation. In 2016, it reopened with a new look and a new name: KMAC Contemporary Art Museum. This renovation cost $3 million and made the building even better. Since then, the museum has offered free admission every day. It also provides free programs for many students, community members, and visitors.
KMAC's Place on Museum Row
KMAC Museum is part of a special area in Louisville called "Museum Row." It is close to several other exciting places. These include the Kentucky Science Center, the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory, the Frazier History Museum, and the Muhammad Ali Center. This makes it easy for visitors to explore many different museums in one trip.
