Kabosu's Life Story
Early Life and Adoption
Kabosu was born around November 2, 2005. She was a special kind of dog called a pedigree dog. Sadly, she was sent to an animal shelter after the place where she was born, a puppy mill (a large dog breeding facility), closed down.
In 2008, a kind Japanese kindergarten teacher named Atsuko Sato adopted Kabosu. Sato named her after a Japanese citrus fruit called kabosu. She thought the dog's face looked round and cute, just like the fruit!
Becoming an Internet Star
Kabosu first appeared in a blog post by Atsuko Sato in 2010. Soon, pictures of Kabosu started to spread online. People added funny text in a font called Comic Sans to these pictures. This is how the famous "Doge" meme began.
The word "Doge" itself was an intentional misspelling of "dog." It was first used in a cartoon series back in 2005. Kabosu's picture, combined with these funny phrases, became super popular.
Dogecoin and Legacy
Kabosu's fame grew so much that she inspired a special kind of digital currency called Dogecoin. This digital money uses the Doge meme as its symbol. It shows how much impact Kabosu had on the internet world.
Later Years and Passing
In late 2022, Kabosu's owner, Atsuko Sato, shared that Kabosu was very sick with leukemia, a serious illness. Luckily, her health improved for a while.
However, on May 24, 2024, it was announced that Kabosu had passed away peacefully. She was 18 years old and died at her home in Sakura, Chiba, Japan. Kabosu will always be remembered as a beloved internet icon.
