What's in a Name? The Story of Kadayam

The name "Kadayam" has an interesting story behind it. Long ago, the town was known by the same name, which literally meant "Town of Kadayam," referring to a specific Hindu group.

There's a local legend about how the town got its name. People used to live very close to the Kalyani Amman temple. The goddess of the temple found the noise from the people too much. So, she took off a Kadayam (which means a bracelet in ancient Tamil) and threw it outside.

She told the people to move and live around the spot where the bracelet landed. This new area then became known as Kadayam.

Subramania Bharati's Connection to Kadayam

The famous poet and freedom fighter, Subramania Bharati, once lived in Kadayam. His wife was from this town. It is believed that Bharathiyar often sang his patriotic songs from the rooftop of his in-laws' house.

Bharati stayed in a part of Kadayam called Pazhaya Gramam with his family. He was known for his daily walks to the Nithyakalayani Amman Temple. During these walks, he would often stop to hug the donkeys that roamed around Pazhaya Gramam.

Many of his important works were created here. These include his Kali songs, the epic poem Panchali Sabhadam, and many revolutionary poems. Some of his well-known poems composed in Kadayam are "Chinnanchiru Kiliye," "Odi Vilayadu Pappa," and "Kaani Nilam Vendum."

Ancient Temples of Kadayam

Kadayam is well-known for its many old temples. These temples are found all over the town. The popular Nithyakalayani Amman Temple is located right in the center of the village.

There is also a Shastha (Thala Malayan) temple. This temple sits on the banks of the Ramanadhi River, which is a small branch of the Thamirabarani River. In Kilakadayam, you can find the Sri Pathrakali Amman Temple and the Sri Muppudathiamman Temple. The Sri Pathrakali Amman Temple is special because it is dedicated to the people of 18 different communities, who celebrate an 8-day festival there.

Kadayam's Famous Acid Limes

Kadayam is very famous for its special type of acidic lime. The soil in Kadayam is very rich, which makes these limes unique and full of juice.

The Tamil Nadu Agricultural University even developed a new variety of lime called PKM-1. They did this by selecting the best local limes from Kadayam at their research station in Periakulam. These special limes are sent to other places in India, including the nearby states of Kerala and Andhra Pradesh.

More than five markets in Kadayam specialize in selling these limes. The lemons grown in areas like Kadayam, Papaankulam, Gothandaramapuram, Servaikaranpatti, Mayilanoor, and Pulavanoor are known for being juicier than limes from other regions.
