Thamirabarani River facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The Thamirabarani River is an important river located in India. It begins its journey high up in the Western Ghats hills, specifically from a peak called Agastyarkoodam. This starting point is near Papanasam in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu.

Why the Name Thamirabarani?

Long ago, this river was known as Porunai in the ancient Tamil land. The name Thamirabarani is believed to come from the word for Copper. This river's water naturally contains a lot of copper. This special copper content is also thought to make the river's water taste sweet and pleasant!

The River's Journey and Importance

The Thamirabarani River flows for about 125 kilometers (about 78 miles). It travels through two main districts: Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi. This river, along with its smaller connecting rivers, called tributaries, provides much-needed water to these areas. Because of this, the water is super important for irrigation, which means watering crops and fields so farmers can grow food.

River Friends: Tributaries and Dams

The Thamirabarani River has several tributaries that join it along its path. Some of these include the Gadananathi River, the Manimuthar River, and the Pachaiyar River. To help manage the water flow and store water for irrigation, many dams have been built around the river.
