Papanasam, also spelled Pavanasam, is a popular picnic spot in the Tirunelveli district of Tamil Nadu, India. It is about 60 kilometers (37 miles) from Tirunelveli. This area is famous for its natural beauty and interesting places to visit.
Some of the main attractions include the Thamirabarani River, Agasthiyar Falls, a special Siva Temple, and the Papanasam dam. There is also a power plant here that uses water to make electricity.

Geography and Rivers
Papanasam is located right on the banks of the Thamirabarani River. This river gets its name because its water naturally contains a lot of copper. In the Tamil language, "thamiram" means copper.

Local Life
The area around Papanasam is very green, with many paddy fields where rice is grown. The town is also known for its schools. Interestingly, the Papanasam hill area is home to about 108 types of herbs that are not found anywhere else in the world.

Manjolai Hills
The Manjolai Hills are located high up in the Western Ghats. This beautiful area is part of the Kalakkad Mundanthurai Tiger Reserve. It is found between 1,000 to 1,500 meters (3,280 to 4,920 feet) above sea level.
In Manjolai, you can see large tea plantations, small villages where tea workers live, and the Upper Kodaiyar Dam. There's also a very windy spot called Kuthiravetti, which offers amazing views.
The tea plantations in Manjolai are managed by a company called Bombay Burmah Trading Corporation Ltd. They operate three main tea estates: Manjolai Estate, Manimutharu Estate, and Oothu Estate. These estates are located at different heights, from about 700 to 1,280 meters (2,300 to 4,200 feet).

Religious Sites
The Papanasanathar Temple is a very important temple located on the banks of the Thamirabarani River. The main god worshipped here is Lord Shiva, known as Papanasar. His name means "destroyer of sins." The goddess of the temple is Lord Loganayaki, also called Ulagambigai.
A very special event called the Maha Puskaram Festival happens here once every 144 years. The festival was celebrated from October 10 to October 21, 2018. People take a holy bath in the Tamiraparani River during this time.
Education
Thiruvalluvar Arts College is a well-known college in this area.
