Kadlu: The Inuit Thunder Goddess

In Inuit mythology, Kadlu is a special goddess connected to the weather. She is one of three sisters who are believed to be responsible for different parts of a storm. Kadlu's unique role is to create the sound of thunder. She does this by jumping on hollow pieces of ice, making a loud booming noise.

The Three Sisters of Storms

Kadlu doesn't create storms all by herself. She works with her two sisters, each having a special job:

• Kadlu makes the thunder by jumping on hollow ice.
• Her sister Kweetoo creates lightning. She does this by rubbing stones together, which makes bright flashes in the sky.
• The third sister, Ignirtoq, also helps with lightning by striking two stones together. Ignirtoq is also responsible for the rain, making it fall in large amounts.

The Story of Kadlu's Childhood

An old story tells us a bit about Kadlu's past. When she was a child, Kadlu was very noisy. Her parents often told her to go outside to play because of all the noise she made indoors. It was outside that Kadlu and her sisters invented their "stormy game." This game involved them practicing their special abilities, which eventually led to them becoming the goddesses of thunder, lightning, and rain.
