Kalkatungu (also called Kalkutungu, Galgadungu, or Kalkadoon) is an Aboriginal language from Australia. It was once spoken by the Kalkadoon people around Mount Isa and Cloncurry in Queensland. Sadly, this language is now extinct, meaning no one speaks it as their main language anymore.

Language Family
Languages can be grouped into families, just like people. Kalkatungu is part of a larger group called the Pama–Nyungan family. Within this big family, Kalkatungu is sometimes placed in a smaller group called Kalkatungic. Another language, Wakabunga, is very closely related to Kalkatungu.
Bringing the Language Back
Even though Kalkatungu is extinct, people are working hard to bring it back to life! Experts like Professor Barry Blake and Sheree Blackley, along with community members like Robert Ah Wing and Uncle Arthur Peterson, are leading these efforts. They use old recordings, written notes about the language, and memories from people who knew it. A big part of this work is teaching the language to younger Kalkatungu people. This helps them connect with their heritage and keep their culture strong.
Language Sounds
Every language has its own special sounds. Kalkatungu had a set of vowel sounds, which are like the 'a', 'e', 'i', 'o', 'u' sounds in English. It also had many consonant sounds, like 'p', 'k', 'm', and 'n'. These sounds were put together to form words, just like in any other language.
Kalkatungu Sign Language
Did you know that some Aboriginal languages also had a way to communicate using signs? The Kalkatungu people had their own special sign language. This was a way for them to talk to each other using hand gestures and body movements, especially when hunting or in situations where they needed to be quiet.
