This company sold "dry goods," which means items like clothing, fabrics, and other household products. Noah was active in business in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador from about 1896 until he passed away. Before moving to Newfoundland, he also ran businesses in New York City and Nova Scotia.

Life Story of Kalleem Noah

Kalleem Noah Bacile was born on October 4, 1868. His birthplace was Hadath, in a country called the Ottoman Empire, which existed a long time ago. His parents were Bacele and Sphire Noah. In 1887, Kalleem moved to the United States. Later, he settled in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, where he worked as a dealer of dry goods.

In May 1891, he married Cecelia Craitem. They had seven children together. By 1896, Kalleem Noah had arrived in Newfoundland. There, he started his own business, Kalleem Noah Ltd., selling dry goods, clothing, and other items. In 1907, he bought a property known as Weston Cottage on Water Street West. Kalleem Noah was a Roman Catholic and a member of the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic organization. His daughter married Michael Basha, who was also a businessman and later became a government official in Canada.

Noah's Business Buildings

Kalleem Noah first set up his business in a building at the corner of Water Street and Buchanan Street. He took ownership of this building in 1898. Over time, this building also housed other businesses run by people from the local Lebanese community. However, it was torn down in 2019.

Later, Noah moved his business further east on Water Street, to numbers 320–322. He first rented this building. Soon after, Noah bought the building. In 1920, he had it taken down to build a "splendid concrete structure." This new building became known as the Noah Building. Kalleem Noah also built and owned other properties in downtown St. John's. One of these was a concrete building at the corner of Springdale Street and New Gower Street, which unfortunately burned down in 1948.
