Kals am Großglockner is a small town in Austria. It is located in a special part of Tyrol called East Tirol. Kals is famous for being near the mighty Großglockner mountain, which is the tallest mountain in all of Austria!

Geography of Kals
Kals is in a beautiful mountain area in eastern Tyrol, Austria. It sits in the valleys of the Kalser and Iseltals, by the Kalserbach river. The area is surrounded by tall mountains. The most famous one is Großglockner, which is the highest mountain in all of Austria! Part of this huge mountain is right here in Kals.
Most of the land in Kals is very rocky and wild. There are also many forests. Only a tiny part of the land is used for farming. Kals is divided into several smaller areas, like Unterpeischlach and Großdorf.
History of Kals
People might have lived in the Kalser valley even before the Paleolithic Age (Stone Age). The first time Kals was officially written about was on August 19, 1197.
In the 1500s, a large copper mine started operating here. Kals is also famous because it was the starting point for the first successful climb of the Großglockner mountain in 1853.

Interesting Sights
- Church in Ködnitz: This church was built a very long time ago, in 1439. It was changed between 1818 and 1821 to look more like the Classicist style.
- Church in Großdorf: This church has a special two-story chapel and a tall, pointed Gothic spire.

Kals is a very popular place for tourists. Many people visit Kals, especially in the summer. On average, about 100,000 people come to visit during the summer months.
Because Kals is high up in the mountains, it is also a great place for skiing in the winter.
