Kane was once a small town, now a "ghost town," located about 2 miles (3 km) south of where the Shoshone River and the Bighorn River meet. This area is in Big Horn County, northern Wyoming, United States. Kane began as a place where lumber was shipped out.

In 1832, wagon trains led by Captain B.L.E. Bonneville traveled through the Kane area. These wagons were pulled by mules, horses, and oxen. Bonneville tried to set up a trading post near Cody using this route. However, he had to give up on the project because of conflicts with local Native American tribes.

Why Did Kane Disappear?

Before the Yellowtail Dam was finished in Montana during the 1960s, the people living in Kane sold their homes and land to the United States government. Once the dam was completed, the area around Kane was flooded. This created a large body of water called Bighorn Lake, which covered the old townsite.

The Kane Cemetery Today

The Kane Cemetery 44°53′03″N 108°12′34″W / 44.88417°N 108.20944°W / 44.88417; -108.20944 is still in its original spot. It is about 1 mile (1.6 km) north of where the two rivers join. Today, this cemetery is part of the Bighorn Canyon National Recreation Area. Family members of those buried there can still choose to be buried in this cemetery. There was a common, but untrue, idea that the cemetery and its graves were moved before the lake filled up.
