Kansai International Airport facts for kids
Kansai International Airport (関西国際空港, Kansai Kokusai Kūkō) (IATA: KIX, ICAO: RJBB) is a very important airport in Japan. It is located in Osaka and serves as a major international gateway for the region. This means many planes fly in and out of Kansai from all over the world!
What makes this airport special is that it's built on an amazing artificial island. This island is located in Osaka Bay, about 38 kilometers (24 miles) southwest of Ōsaka Station. Imagine building an entire airport in the middle of the sea!
The airport first opened its doors on September 4, 1994. It covers a huge area of 1,068 hectares (about 2,639 acres). Kansai Airport has two main runways where planes take off and land. One runway is 3,500 meters (about 2.2 miles) long, and the other is 4,000 meters (about 2.5 miles) long. Both are 60 meters (about 197 feet) wide.
A Very Busy Airport
Kansai International Airport is incredibly busy! In 2011, over 13.6 million passengers traveled through the airport. Most of these passengers, about 9.9 million, were on international flights, traveling to or from other countries. The rest, about 3.7 million, were on domestic flights, traveling within Japan.
That same year, more than 53,000 planes landed or took off from Kansai Airport. This shows just how important it is for connecting Japan with the rest of the world and for travel within the country.
