The Kansas City Power & Light District, also known as KC P&L, is a lively area in Downtown Kansas City, Missouri. It's a place where people can go for dining, shopping, and entertainment. This district was created by The Cordish Companies and covers nine city blocks. It's a big project that helped bring new life to downtown Kansas City.

In 2009, the Power & Light District received an important award. It won the Urban Land Institute Award of Excellence. This award recognized its positive impact on making downtown Kansas City a vibrant place again.

The Power & Light District is located right next to the T-Mobile Center. It got its name from the famous art deco Kansas City Power and Light Building. This historic building is home to the headquarters of the Kansas City Power & Light Company.

At the heart of the Power & Light District is a special area called Kansas City Live! This section is all about live music and fun events. It has hosted many exciting things, like American Idol auditions in 2008. It's also a popular spot for watching big sports games with friends.

The roof over Kansas City Live! is quite unique. It's made from a special material called ETFE. This material is strong and lets light through, making the area feel open.

Dining and Nightlife at Kansas City Live!

The ground floor of Kansas City Live! is filled with many different places to eat and drink. You can find restaurants like McFadden's Sports Saloon and Pizza Bar. There's also County Road Ice House, which is a local spot.

The second floor of Kansas City Live! has more entertainment options. These include places like Mosaic Ultra Lounge and Howl at the Moon. There's also No Other Pub, which is a partnership with the local MLS team, Sporting Kansas City.

The Power & Light District is home to several important and popular spots:

  • B&B Theatres Mainstreet Theater: This is a historic theater that was renovated. It shows current movies in six different screens. It opened on May 1, 2009.
  • H&R Block: The main headquarters for this company is located here. It opened in October 2006.
  • Hilton President Kansas City: This is a beautiful, refurbished historic hotel from 1926. It reopened on January 5, 2006.
  • Midland Theatre: This venue can hold 3,500 people. It's a popular place for concerts and live music. It reopened in September 2008.
  • PBR Big Sky: This is a country and western bar. It opened on April 10, 2008.

One Light Luxury Apartments

The Cordish Company also planned to build several tall apartment buildings in the Power & Light District. These are designed to be high-end homes.

One Light Luxury Apartments

The first apartment tower built was called One Light Luxury Apartments. Construction started on April 22, 2014. It opened on December 8, 2015, and was almost completely rented out. This tower is 25 stories tall. It connects to a grocery store and a gym nearby.

Two Light Luxury Apartments

Two Light Luxury Apartments opened on May 4, 2018. This building is 24 stories tall and has 296 apartments. Each apartment has large windows that go from the floor to the ceiling. Two Light also includes a parking garage and spaces for small shops. It also has a shared office space called Spark KC.

Three Light Tower

The Three Light tower was finished in September 2023. It is 301 feet tall with 25 stories and 288 apartment units.

Special Rules for the District

The Power & Light District has a unique rule about drinks. In 2005, a special law was passed for this area. It allows people to carry drinks from one establishment to another within the district. This is allowed in areas not open to cars. The drink must be in a plastic cup with the logo of the place where it was bought. This is one of the few places in the United States with such a rule.
