Kansas Settlement is a small community located in the Sulphur Springs Valley in Cochise County, Arizona, in the United States. It is known for its history of farming.
History
After World War II, farming grew a lot in Kansas Settlement. People found new ways to sell their crops. They also used better ways to water their fields.
But by 1985, most of the farms had stopped growing crops. Less than 25% of the irrigated farmland was still being used. The biggest problem was that the water levels underground were dropping. This made it very expensive to pump water for the farms. For example, in 1963 alone, the water levels in Kansas Settlement dropped by fifty feet.
One important crop grown in this area is pecans, especially a type called Western Schley pecans. From May 2005 to December 2008, scientists did a big study in Kansas Settlement. They wanted to see how adding nitrogen fertilizer affected the Western Schley pecan trees.
