Karađorđeva šnicla facts for kids
Karađorđe's schnitzel (Serbian: Карађорђева шницла/Karađorđeva šnicla) is a special and tasty Serbian dish. It is a type of breaded cutlet, which means a thin piece of meat covered in breadcrumbs and then cooked. This famous meal is named after Karađorđe, a very important Serbian leader from history.
The dish is made from a rolled piece of veal or pork steak. Inside, it is stuffed with a creamy dairy product called kajmak, which is similar to clotted cream. After being stuffed, the meat is covered in breadcrumbs and then fried until it's golden and crispy. People usually enjoy Karađorđe's schnitzel with roasted potatoes and a creamy tartar sauce.
How Was This Dish Invented?
Karađorđe's schnitzel is not an ancient recipe. It was actually created quite recently! A talented chef named Mića Stojanović invented it in 1959.
The Chef's Clever Idea
One day, Chef Mića needed to prepare a dish called Chicken Kiev for an important visitor from the Soviet Union. However, he faced a problem: he didn't have any poultry (chicken) available! Instead of giving up, he decided to use veal meat.
A Medal on a Plate
Chef Mića wasn't completely happy with how the veal dish looked at first. To make it more appealing, he poured tartar sauce over it. He then decorated it with a slice of lemon and some pieces of tomato. When he finished, the dish looked a lot like the medal of the Order of the Star of Karađorđe. This famous Serbian medal inspired the chef to name his new creation "Karađorđe's schnitzel." And that's how a delicious and iconic Serbian meal was born!
