These songs praised Lord Shiva in a village called Thiruvalangadu.

The Temple's Story

The Karaikal Ammaiyar temple was built by a person named Malaiperumal Pillai. He finished building it in the year 1929. Malaiperumal Pillai was born in Karaikal in 1890 and passed away in 1937. Inside the Ammaiyar temple, there are special areas. These areas are for goddess Karaikal Ammaiyar, Lord Somanathar (who is another name for Lord Shiva), and Lord Vinayaka.

The Famous Mango Festival

The most famous event in Karaikal is the Mangani (Mango) festival. This festival is celebrated every year during the Tamil month of Aani, which is around June or July. The festival remembers a special story. Long ago, Lord Shiva came to the world as Bikshatadanamurthi, begging for food. In Karaikal, Ammaiyar offered him a mango and some curd rice.

This festival is very spiritual. People believe that women who take part in the festival and eat the mangoes thrown during the celebrations will be blessed with children. It's a joyful and important tradition for the local community.
