Karel Brückner was a famous Czech football coach. He was born in Olomouc on November 13, 1939. He is known for leading the Czech Republic national team to great success.

Playing Football
Karel Brückner played football as a forward. He played for teams in the lower leagues, like MŽ Olomouc. He also played two games for Baník Ostrava in the top league during the 1970–71 season.
Coaching Teams
Brückner started his coaching career in 1973 with his hometown club, SK Sigma Olomouc. He later coached Zbrojovka Brno and Inter Bratislava. With Inter Bratislava, he won the Slovakia Cup in 1985.
Coaching the Czech Under-21 Team
In 1997, Brückner became the coach of the Czech Republic national under-21 football team. Under his leadership, the team finished second at the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He also worked as an assistant manager for the main Czech Republic national team at UEFA Euro 2000.
Leading the Czech National Team
Brückner became the manager of the Czech Republic national football team in 2001. This was after the team did not qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup.
Euro 2004 Success
Under Brückner, the Czech Republic team played 20 matches without losing until March 2004. They won seven out of eight qualifying matches for the UEFA Euro 2004 tournament. In a group match against the Netherlands, the Czech team was down by two goals early on. Brückner made a brave decision to substitute a defender for a midfielder in the first half. This helped the team come back and win the game. The Czech Republic went on to reach the semi-finals of Euro 2004, winning a bronze medal.
World Cup and Euro 2008
The team qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup but did not make it past the group stage. Brückner stayed on as coach for two more years. The Czech Republic also qualified for UEFA Euro 2008. Before this tournament, Brückner announced he would leave his position afterward. The team did not get past the group stage in Euro 2008.
Coaching Austria
Even after saying he would retire, Brückner quickly found a new job. In July 2008, he became the new manager for the Austria national football team. However, on March 2, 2009, he left the Austrian team. He later became an advisor to the Football Association of the Czech Republic in July 2009.
