Playing Football Before Coaching
Before becoming a coach, Karel Brückner played football himself. He was a forward for teams like MŽ Olomouc. He played in lower leagues. He also played two games for Baník Ostrava in the top league during the 1970–71 season.
Early Coaching Days
Brückner started his coaching career in 1973. His first team was his home club, SK Sigma Olomouc. Later, he coached FC Zbrojovka Brno in the top Czechoslovak league. He also led Inter Bratislava to win the Slovakia Cup in 1985.
Leading the Czech Youth Team
In 1997, Brückner became the coach of the Czech Republic's Under-21 team. Under his leadership, the team finished second at the 2000 UEFA European Under-21 Championship. He also worked as an assistant manager for the main Czech national team during UEFA Euro 2000.
Coaching the Czech National Team
Brückner took over as the manager of the Czech national team in 2001. This was after they did not qualify for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Under his guidance, the team became very strong. They played 20 matches without losing until March 2004. They won seven out of eight qualifying games for UEFA Euro 2004.
Euro 2004: An Amazing Comeback
At UEFA Euro 2004, the Czech Republic faced the Netherlands. They were losing 2–0 early in the game. Brückner made a brave decision. He brought on a midfielder, Vladimír Šmicer, very early in the match. This helped the team score three goals and win the game 3–2. It was an amazing comeback! The team went on to reach the semi-finals of the tournament.
World Cup & Euro 2008
The team also qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. However, they did not get past the group stage. Brückner stayed on as coach and led the team to qualify for UEFA Euro 2008. Before this tournament, he announced he would leave his job afterwards. The Czech Republic did not get past the group stage in Euro 2008.
Coaching Austria & Later Roles
Even after saying he would retire, Brückner soon found a new job. In July 2008, he became the new manager for the national team of Austria. He coached them for a short time.
