Early Life and Education
Kari Hotakainen was born in Pori, Finland. His father, Keijo Hotakainen, worked as a storekeeper and photographer. His mother, Meeri Ala-Kuusisto, was a sales clerk. Kari finished high school in 1976 and later earned a Bachelor of Arts degree.
Becoming a Writer
Kari Hotakainen began his writing journey in the early 1980s by writing poetry. His first collection of poems, Harmittavat takaiskut (which means Unfortunate Setbacks), was published in 1982. After writing poetry, he started writing books for children and young adults. Later, he moved on to writing novels for grown-ups.
Before he became a full-time writer in 1996, Kari Hotakainen had several jobs. He worked as a news reporter and in the advertising department of a company called WSOY. He also wrote columns for a newspaper called Helsingin Sanomat.
Famous Works and Awards
Kari Hotakainen became very well-known when his book Klassikko (The Classic) was nominated for the Finlandia Prize in 1997. This book was partly about his own life.
In 2002, he won the prestigious Finlandia Prize for his book Juoksuhaudantie (Battle Trench Avenue). This book was so popular that it was later made into a movie with the same name. Two years later, in 2004, he received the Nordic Council's Literature Prize for the same book. This is a very important award for writers in Nordic countries.
Kari Hotakainen has also written for the stage and radio. In 2006, he received the Nordic Drama Award for his play Punahukka. He has also created plays for children, radio dramas, and scripts for a 10-part TV series called Tummien vesien tulkit.
On March 3, 2012, Kari Hotakainen was in a car accident.
