Karim Camara (born June 3, 1971) is an American pastor. He used to be a member of the Democratic Party. He served in the New York State Assembly. This is where laws are made for New York State.
He represented the 43rd Assembly District. This district includes parts of Crown Heights, Lefferts Gardens, and East Flatbush in Brooklyn. Karim Camara is also the founder and senior pastor of the Abundant Life Church in Brooklyn. Before that, he was a pastor at First Baptist Church of Crown Heights. He also helped with then-U.S. Senator Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign in New York State.
He was first elected to the State Assembly in November 2005. This was a special election to fill a vacant seat. In February 2015, he left his Assembly seat. He then became the executive director of the Office of Faith-Based Community Development.
Karim Camara's Early Life and Education
Karim Camara was born Karim Abdur-Razzaq in Brooklyn. He spent most of his childhood in Crown Heights, Brooklyn. This area is part of the Assembly District he later represented. He also lived in Queens and on a farm in Westtown, New York for some years.
He graduated from Brooklyn Friends School in 1988. He then went to Xavier University of Louisiana. There, he earned a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) degree. He studied English Literature and Chemistry. Later, he earned a Masters of Divinity degree from the New York Theological Seminary. This degree is often for people who want to become religious leaders.
His Career and Family Life
Early in his career, Karim Camara was the fundraising director for the Cush Campus Schools in Brooklyn. His mother founded these schools and is their principal.
Karim Camara lives in Brooklyn. He lives with his wife, Orelia Merchant, and their two children. His wife is a federal district court judge.
