Karim Haggui's Football Journey
Starting His Career
Karim Haggui was born in a place called Kasserine in Tunisia. He began playing football in 1998 with a local team, AS Kasserine. After two years, he moved to Etoile du Sahel. He became a professional player there in 2003. He played for Etoile du Sahel for one season.
Playing in France: RC Strasbourg
In 2004, Karim moved to France to play for RC Strasbourg. He made his first appearance in France's top league, Ligue 1, in August 2004. He didn't play much at first. But later in the season, he became a regular player. He played 20 games in his first year.
His team, Strasbourg, also won the French League Cup that season. This win meant they could play in the UEFA Cup, a big European competition. In his second season, he scored two goals in one game. He also scored a goal in the UEFA Cup. Strasbourg reached the round of 16 in the UEFA Cup.
Moving to Germany: Bayer Leverkusen
After Strasbourg was moved down to a lower league in 2006, Karim joined a German team, Bayer Leverkusen. He started playing for them in July 2006. His first game in the Bundesliga, Germany's top league, was a 3-0 win.
Karim played regularly in his first two seasons with Leverkusen. He scored his first Bundesliga goal in September 2007. He scored another goal in March 2008. He also played in the UEFA Cup again. Leverkusen reached the quarter-finals of the UEFA Cup.
In his third season, he didn't play as much. But he still scored one goal. He also played in two games for the DFB-Pokal, which is the German Cup. His team reached the final, but they lost.
Time at Hannover 96
In 2009, Karim moved to another German team, Hannover 96. He signed a two-year contract. He played his first game for Hannover in August 2009. He scored his first goal for the team in October 2009.
In one game, he accidentally scored two goals for the other team. This is called an "own goal." It was a tough game for his team. He continued to be a key player for Hannover 96 in his second season.
Later Clubs
In 2013, Karim joined VfB Stuttgart. He played there for two years. After that, in 2015, he moved to Fortuna Düsseldorf. His last club was FC St. Gallen, which he joined in 2016. He played for them for two years.
Playing for Tunisia
Karim Haggui also played for the Tunisian national team. He started playing for his country in 2003.
Winning the Africa Cup of Nations
His first big tournament with Tunisia was the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations. This tournament was held in Tunisia, his home country. Karim was the youngest player on the team. He played in all six of their games.
In the semi-finals, he scored a very important penalty kick. This helped Tunisia win a "penalty shootout" and reach the final. A penalty shootout happens when a game is tied, and players take turns trying to score from the penalty spot. Tunisia won the final game 2-1 against Morocco. They became champions of Africa!
Other Tournaments
In 2004, Karim also played for Tunisia at the Summer Olympics. He played in all three group games.
He played in the 2006 Africa Cup of Nations in Egypt. He scored a goal in the quarter-final game. But Tunisia lost that game in a penalty shootout. Later that year, he played in the 2006 FIFA World Cup in Germany. He played in all three of Tunisia's group matches.
In 2008, Karim played in the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations in Ghana. Tunisia reached the quarter-finals.
