Karin Maria Keller-Sutter, born on December 22, 1963, is a Swiss politician. She is set to become the President of Switzerland in 2025. She has also been a member of the Swiss government, known as the Federal Council, since 2019.
She belongs to a political party called The Liberals. Currently, she is in charge of the Federal Department of Finance, which handles Switzerland's money matters. Before this, she was part of the Council of States from 2011 to 2019. She even served as the President of the Council of States from 2017 to 2018. She also held many political jobs at the local and regional levels.
In 2023, the Financial Times newspaper named Karin Keller-Sutter as one of the most influential women in the world. She was recognized for her important work during the takeover of Credit Suisse by UBS, a major event in Swiss banking.
Early Life and Education
Karin Maria Sutter was born on December 22, 1963, in Uzwil, Switzerland. She was the youngest of four children. Her father, Walter Sutter Sr., was a butcher who later became a chef. Her mother was Rosa Sutter.
Her family came from Jonschwil. Her parents ran a restaurant there for many years. Her family members were often innkeepers and local politicians in the St. Gallen area. Later, her parents moved to Wil and took over another restaurant. Karin grew up in Wil and went to local schools there. She also studied in Neuchâtel.
She studied to become a translator and interpreter at a school in Zurich. After that, she studied political science in London and at the University of Montréal in Canada. She also earned a special diploma in pedagogy (the study of teaching) from the University of Fribourg.
Professional Career
While she was studying, Karin Keller-Sutter worked as a freelance translator and interpreter. Later, she became a teacher at a vocational school. She also served as the vice president for the board of trustees of the St. Gallen Foundation for International Studies. This foundation helps organize important international meetings.
Political Journey
Karin Keller-Sutter began her political career in Wil. She was a municipal councillor from 1992 to 2000. In 1997, she led the municipal assembly. From 1996 to 2000, she was also a representative in the regional parliament of the canton of St. Gallen, called the Kantonsrat. During this time, she also led the local branch of her political party, the FDP.
On March 12, 2000, Karin Keller-Sutter was elected to the regional government of St. Gallen, known as the Regierungsrat. There, she was put in charge of the department for security and justice. She also helped lead a group of regional justice and police directors. From 2006 to 2007, she was the president of the St. Gallen government.
In 2010, Karin Keller-Sutter tried to become a member of the Swiss Federal Council, which is Switzerland's main government body. However, she did not win that election. On October 23, 2011, she was elected to represent St. Gallen in the Council of States. This is one of the two houses of the Swiss parliament. She served as the President of the Council of States from 2017 to 2018.
On October 8, 2018, she announced again that she would run for the Swiss Federal Council. This time, she was successful. On December 5, 2018, she was elected to the Federal Council. She joined the government along with Viola Amherd.
Karin Keller-Sutter will officially become the President of Switzerland on January 1, 2025. Guy Parmelin will serve as the Vice President.
Personal Life
In 1989, Karin Keller-Sutter married Dr. Morten Keller, who is a medical doctor. They do not have children. They live in Wil, and they have a Jack Russell Terrier dog named Picasso.
