Johann Schneider-Ammann, born on February 18, 1952, is a Swiss businessman and politician. He was a member of the Swiss government, called the Federal Council, from 2010 to 2018. In 2016, he even served as the President of Switzerland. During his time in government, he was in charge of the Department of Economic Affairs, Education, and Research.

About Johann Schneider-Ammann
Early Life and Business Career
Johann Schneider-Ammann was born in Sumiswald, a town in the canton of Bern, Switzerland. His father was a veterinarian.
He studied electrical engineering at ETH Zürich and graduated in 1977. Later, in 1983, he earned a Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree from INSEAD in France.
From 1990 to 2010, he led his family's company, Ammann Group. This company specializes in mechanical engineering. He was the fourth generation of his family to run the business. In 2010, he passed control of the company to his two children.
Schneider-Ammann is married to Katharina Ammann and they have two children. He lives in Langenthal, Switzerland.
Political Journey
Johann Schneider-Ammann began his political career in 1999. He was elected to the Swiss National Council for the canton of Bern. He was a member of the Free Democratic Party. From 1999, he also led a business group called Swissmem.
He was re-elected to the National Council in 2003 and 2007. In 2009, he joined a new political party called FDP. The Liberals.
In 2010, he was chosen to be a member of the Swiss Federal Council. This is like being a minister in the government. He took office on November 1, 2010. He became the head of the Federal Department of Economic Affairs. This department later added Education and Research to its name in 2013. Before joining the Federal Council, he announced he would leave his business roles.

In 2015, he became the Vice President of Switzerland. The President that year was Simonetta Sommaruga. On January 1, 2016, he became the President of the Swiss Confederation. Doris Leuthard served as Vice President alongside him.
As President, Schneider-Ammann attended important events. On June 1, 2016, he was present at the official opening of the Gotthard Base Tunnel. This tunnel became the longest railway tunnel in the world. Other leaders, like German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President François Hollande, were also there.
Johann Schneider-Ammann left the Federal Council on December 31, 2018. Karin Keller-Sutter took his place on January 1, 2019.
