INSEAD (pronounced IN-see-ad) is a famous business school. Its full name is "Institut Européen d'Administration des Affaires," which means "European Institute of Business Administration." It's a special school that teaches people how to lead and manage businesses.

INSEAD has campuses in different parts of the world. You can find them in France (Europe Campus), Singapore (Asia Campus), and the United Arab Emirates (Middle East Campus). It's known for being very international. All its main courses are taught in English.

The school offers advanced degrees for people who have already finished their first university studies. These include programs like the Master of Business Administration (MBA) and the Master in Management (MIM).

History of INSEAD

Chateau Fontainebleau
The beautiful Château de Fontainebleau, where INSEAD first started.

INSEAD was started in 1957 by a few important people. These included Georges Doriot, Claude Janssen, and Olivier Giscard d'Estaing. The first money to start the school came from the Paris Chamber of Commerce.

Georges Doriot was a professor at Harvard Business School. He wanted to create a school that would teach business skills in Europe. He also hoped it would bring European business people together after World War II.

The very first classes were held in 1959 at the historic Château de Fontainebleau. Later, in 1967, the school moved to its current main campus in France.

From the beginning, INSEAD wanted to be very international. They made sure students from many different countries joined. They also believed knowing many languages was important. At first, classes were taught in English, French, and German. Today, all classes are in English, but students still need to know three languages to graduate.

In 2000, INSEAD opened a new campus in Singapore. This helped the school become even more global.

INSEAD Campuses Around the World

INSEAD has several campuses that help it be a truly global business school.

The first campus, called the INSEAD Europe Campus, is in Fontainebleau, France. This town is not far from Paris.

The second campus is the INSEAD Asia Campus. It's located in Singapore, a city-state known for its modern look.

There's also the INSEAD Middle East Campus in Abu Dhabi, which is in the United Arab Emirates.

In 2020, INSEAD also opened a hub in San Francisco, USA. This helps them connect with businesses in North America. Having campuses in different parts of the world helps INSEAD teach students from all over and understand global business better.

Understanding the Grande École System

INSEAD is part of something special in France called the "grande école" system. These are elite schools that are separate from the main public university system.

Think of them like the Ivy League schools in the United States or Oxbridge in the UK. They are very competitive to get into. Many students from these schools go on to hold important jobs in government and big companies in France.

Even though they can be more expensive than public universities, grandes écoles often have smaller classes. Many of their programs are taught in English. They also focus on international experiences and have strong connections with businesses.

INSEAD is a member of the Conférence des Grandes Écoles (CGE). This is a group of top French business schools. Out of about 250 business schools in France, only 39 are CGE members. INSEAD also has special accreditations from international groups like EQUIS, AACSB, and AMBA. This means its programs meet very high standards.

INSEAD Degree Programs

INSEAD offers several advanced degree programs for students who want to learn about business and management.

Master in Management (MIM)

The Master in Management program is for younger students. These are people who have just finished their first university degree or have only a couple of years of work experience. Students in this program take classes at both the Europe and Asia Campuses. They can also go on optional trips to places like China or San Francisco.

MBA Program

The MBA (Master of Business Administration) is one of INSEAD's most popular programs. Students can take their core courses at the Europe or Asia Campuses. Some faculty members teach at both campuses, and there are also permanent teachers at each location.

INSEAD offers two MBA schedules each year. One starts in September and takes ten months to finish. The other starts in January and takes 12 months, which allows students to do a summer internship.

Executive MBA Program

INSEAD has two Executive MBA (EMBA) programs: the Global Executive MBA (GEMBA) and the Tsinghua INSEAD EMBA (TIEMBA). These programs are for experienced business leaders. They are part-time and modular, meaning students study in short, intense periods.

For the GEMBA program, students spend time at all three campuses: France, Abu Dhabi, and Singapore. The TIEMBA program involves studying at Tsinghua's campus in Beijing, China, and the INSEAD campus in Singapore. Both EMBA programs include a special Leadership Development Program to help students improve their leadership skills.

Executive Master in Change

The Executive Master in Change (EMC) is a unique program. It helps people understand human behavior and how organizations work. It combines business education with psychology. This program helps leaders manage changes within their companies.

Students in this program learn from real-life situations. It's designed to help them step back, think, and try new approaches. The program lasts 18 months and includes on-campus modules, practical experiences, and a Master Thesis.

Executive Master in Finance

The Executive Master in Finance (EMFin) teaches advanced finance and accounting skills. It also helps students develop leadership and management abilities. This program is designed for professionals who want to continue working while they study. It's offered in a modular format over 18 months.

PhD Program

The INSEAD PhD in Management is for students who want to become professors and researchers. It takes four to five years of full-time study. The first two years are for coursework, and the remaining years are for research and writing a dissertation. Students can start their studies in Singapore or France. They can also do an exchange program in the USA.

Business Foundations Program

INSEAD also offers a special dual degree called the Business Foundations (BFC) program. It's for recent graduates from other fields like science, medicine, engineering, or law. It helps them learn important business skills.

Executive Education at INSEAD

INSEAD also offers "executive education" programs. These are shorter courses for experienced professionals and leaders. They help people update their skills and learn new strategies.

These programs are held at INSEAD's campuses and online. Many participants are senior managers who want to improve their leadership and business knowledge. Each year, over 10,000 executives from many different countries attend these courses.
