Karl Larsson (born September 16, 1893 – died June 1, 1967) was a talented Swedish-born American artist. He was known for many things, including being an engraver, a painter, and a sculptor.
His Life and Art
Early Life and Training
Karl Larsson was born in Skövde, Sweden. In 1913, he moved to America. He studied art at the famous Art Students League in New York City. He also became a member of the American Watercolor Society. This shows he was very serious about his art.
Artistic Achievements
Karl Larsson was a very versatile artist. He worked as a painter, a sculptor, and an engraver. He also created large wall paintings called murals and illustrated books. In 1923, his art was shown at the Gothenburg Exhibition (1923). The next year, in 1924, he also showed his work with the Society of Independent Artists in New York City.
He even illustrated children's books! His wife, Marjorie Flack (1897-1958), was an author, and Karl helped bring her stories to life with his drawings.
Later Life and Works
Later in his life, Karl Larsson lived in Santa Fe, New Mexico. There, he created a beautiful mural for the Chapel of Lady of Guadalupe Church in Jemez Springs, New Mexico. He also made special silver sculptures for churches in Tucson, Fort Defiance, and Phoenix, Arizona. Karl Larsson passed away in 1967 in Dobbs Ferry, New York.
