Karl Augustus Menninger (born July 22, 1893 – died July 18, 1990) was an American psychiatrist. A psychiatrist is a doctor who helps people with their mental health. Karl was part of the famous Menninger family of psychiatrists. They started the Menninger Foundation and the Menninger Clinic in Topeka, Kansas.

About Karl Menninger

Karl Menninger was born in Topeka, Kansas, on July 22, 1893. His parents were Florence Vesta (Kinsley) and Charles Frederick Menninger. He studied at several universities, including Washburn University and University of Wisconsin–Madison. He also studied medicine at Harvard Medical School. He finished medical school in 1917 with high honors.

After his studies, Menninger worked at the Boston Psychopathic Hospital. He also taught at Harvard Medical School. In 1919, he went back to Topeka. There, he and his father started the Menninger Clinic. By 1925, they had enough support to build the Menninger Sanitarium. This was a special hospital for people needing mental health care.

In 1930, Karl Menninger wrote a book called The Human Mind. This book helped explain psychiatry to more people. In 1941, the Menninger Foundation was created. After World War II, Karl Menninger helped start the Winter Veterans Administration Hospital in Topeka. This hospital became a huge training center for psychiatrists. In 1946, he founded the Menninger School of Psychiatry. It was later named after him in 1985.

Karl Menninger married Grace Gaines in 1916. They had three children: Martha, Julia, and Robert. They divorced in 1941. Later that year, on September 9, 1941, Karl married Jeanette Lyle. They adopted a daughter named Rosemary in 1948. Karl Menninger passed away on July 18, 1990. He was almost 97 years old.

Karl Menninger's Books

Karl Menninger wrote many important books during his career. In his first book, The Human Mind, he said that psychiatry was a real science. He also believed that people with mental illness were not so different from healthy people.

In another book, The Crime of Punishment, Menninger argued that crime could be prevented. He thought that psychiatric treatment could help. He felt that punishment was an old, harsh way of dealing with crime. He suggested that people who committed crimes should be treated like those with mental health issues.

Other books he wrote include The Vital Balance, Man Against Himself, and Love Against Hate.

Awards and Recognition

  • In 1981, Karl Menninger received the Presidential Medal of Freedom. This is a very high honor given by the President of the United States. Jimmy Carter gave him this award.
  • In 1985, the Menninger School of Psychiatry was renamed in his honor. It became the Karl Menninger School of Psychiatry and Mental Health Science.
