Karlin, Missouri facts for kids
Karlin is a small, unincorporated community located in central Polk County, in the beautiful Ozarks region of southwest Missouri, United States. An "unincorporated community" means it's a small area that doesn't have its own local government like a city or town.
You can find Karlin about 3.5 miles south of Bolivar. It's also about 1.5 miles west of Missouri Route 13. The area is just north of Missouri Route U and right next to where the Burlington Northern Railroad used to be.
A Look Back: Karlin's History
Karlin wasn't always called Karlin! For a while, it was known as "Tremont." A post office, which helps send mail, was set up in Tremont in 1889.
The name of the community changed to Karlin in 1903. This new name came from a place called Karlín in the Czech Republic. The post office in Karlin stayed open until 1944, when it finally closed.
The Railroad and the Trail
For many years, a railroad track ran right through Karlin. But in 1991, these railroad tracks were no longer used. They were "abandoned," meaning trains stopped running on them.
Today, this old railroad path has a new purpose! The part of the railroad that goes through Karlin is now part of the Frisco Highline Trail. This trail is a long path, stretching 37.6 miles from Springfield all the way to Bolivar, Missouri. It's a great place for people to walk, run, or bike.
