Karlina Leksono Supelli (born January 15, 1958) is a famous thinker and scientist from Jakarta, Indonesia. She is known for being one of Indonesia's first female astronomers and for her work in philosophy, which is the study of knowledge and existence. Besides her work in science, she is also a brave human rights activist who has stood up for people in need.

Early Life and Education

Karlina was always interested in the world around her and the stars above. She studied Astronomy at the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), a top science university in Indonesia.

After finishing her first degree, she traveled to the United Kingdom to continue her studies. She earned a Master of Science degree in Space Science from University College London. Later, she returned to Indonesia and completed her doctorate in Philosophy at the University of Indonesia in 1997. Her education in both the stars and human thought makes her a unique and important thinker.

A Career of Science and Activism

Karlina Supelli has used her knowledge to teach others. She has worked as a lecturer in both philosophy and astronomy at several universities in Indonesia. Today, she teaches at the Driyarkara School of Philosophy in Jakarta. Her writings have appeared in many journals, sharing her ideas with people in Indonesia and around the world.

Standing Up for Human Rights

Besides her academic work, Karlina is known for her courage. In 1998, during a difficult time in Indonesia's history known as the Reformation, she became a voice for ordinary people.

In February 1998, she led a group of mothers in a peaceful protest. Because of this, she and two other women were briefly arrested. This event showed her commitment to fighting for a better and fairer society.

Defending Victims of Violence

Karlina also bravely defended victims during the Indonesian riots of May 1998. Many people, especially women of Chinese Indonesian descent, were treated very badly during this time. Karlina spoke out to protect their rights and make sure their stories were heard.

Her work was not easy. She traveled to the United States to ask the government to stop sending weapons to Indonesia, hoping to prevent more violence. Because she was speaking out, some people made threats against her. However, Karlina was not scared away and continued her important work. She also helped women in regions like Aceh and East Timor who were harmed during times of conflict.
