Karlina Leksono Supelli was born in Jakarta, Indonesia, on January 15, 1958. She is a very important Indonesian thinker and scientist. Karlina is known for her work as both a philosopher and an astronomer. She was one of the first women in Indonesia to become an astronomer.
Early Life and Education
Karlina Supelli studied at some of the best universities. She earned her first degree in Astronomy from the Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB). Later, she traveled to London, England. There, she received her Master of Science (MSc) degree in Space Science from University College London. She then returned to Indonesia to complete her education. In 1997, she earned her doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Indonesia.
Standing Up for People
Karlina Supelli is also known for her brave actions to help others. During a time of big changes in Indonesia in 1998, called the Reformation, she played an important role. She led a group of mothers who were worried about their country. In February 1998, they held a peaceful protest in front of the Hotel Indonesia. Because of this, Karlina and two other women, Gadis Arivia and Wilasih Noviana, were arrested.
She continued her efforts to bring about positive change. She even traveled to the United States. There, she tried to convince the U.S. government to stop sending weapons to Indonesia. Her actions were very bold and she faced many challenges. But Karlina Supelli was very determined and did not give up.
Teaching and Writing
Karlina Supelli has shared her knowledge with many students. She has taught philosophy and astronomy at several universities in Indonesia. Her ideas and research have been published in many journals. These writings have appeared both in Indonesia and in other countries around the world. Today, she teaches at the Sekolah Tinggi Filsafat Driyarkara (Driyarkara High School of Philosophy) in Jakarta.
