The Bandung Institute of Technology (Indonesian: Institut Teknologi Bandung), often called ITB, is a top public university in Bandung, Indonesia. It is known for its strong programs in science, engineering, and fine arts. Many important leaders in different fields, like science, business, and politics, have studied here.

History

ITB started as the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THB) on July 3, 1920. This was when Indonesia was under Dutch rule. A German-Dutch businessman, Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha, helped start the school. He wanted to train more skilled engineers in the country.

The school building was designed in 1918 by a Dutch architect, Henri Maclaine Pont. He mixed Indonesian building styles with modern ideas. When it first opened, it only had one main department for engineering.

Over the years, the university's name changed several times. During World War II, when Japan occupied Indonesia, it was called the Industrial University. After Indonesia became independent, it was known as the Technical High School. Later, it became part of the University of Indonesia.

Finally, on March 2, 1959, the Bandung Institute of Technology was officially founded as its own university. It focused on natural sciences, technology, and fine arts.

In 2020, Reini Djuhraeni Wirahadikusumah became the first woman to be the rector (head) of ITB. She will lead the university until 2025.

Campuses

ITB has several campuses, covering a large area of about 770,000 square meters.

Ganesha Campus

The main and original campus is in Ganesha. It has many facilities for students. You can find classrooms, labs, an art gallery, a sports center, a big library, and a medical clinic here.

Jatinangor Campus

Because more and more students wanted to join ITB, a second campus was built in Jatinangor. This campus is just as important as the Ganesha campus. Starting in August 2023, all new students will begin their first year of studies at the Jatinangor Campus.

Cirebon Campus

ITB also plans to build a new campus in Cirebon. This new campus will help the university do more research and offer more education in the future. It shows ITB's commitment to helping Indonesia's people grow and learn.

Student Funding

In early 2024, there was a discussion about how students pay for their tuition at ITB. The university had partnered with a financial company to offer students the option to pay their tuition fees in monthly installments. This was meant to help students who might find it hard to pay all at once.

However, some students were concerned about this option. On January 29, hundreds of students protested at the ITB Ganesha campus. They felt that the installment plan was too expensive and put a burden on them. They asked the university to offer other ways to pay that would be easier for students.

The university explained that this partnership was approved by the financial authorities. They also mentioned that other universities offer similar payment options. The Ministry of Education asked ITB to find a good solution for student funding. This is to make sure that high-quality education is available to everyone.

A former governor, Ridwan Kamil, said that ITB's idea was good. He believed it aimed to help students with financial difficulties. He also stressed that any payment option should not be a burden on students.
