The Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng, around 1924-1932

The Bandung Institute of Technology started as the Technische Hoogeschool te Bandoeng (THB). This was during the time when the Dutch ruled Indonesia. A German-Dutch businessman named Karel Albert Rudolf Bosscha helped start the project. The government agreed because they needed more people with technical skills in the colony.

A Dutch architect, Henri Maclaine Pont, designed the school building in 1918. He mixed Indonesian building styles with modern ideas. The school first opened on July 3, 1920. Back then, it only had one main department: Technical Science. It offered one major, which was Road and Water Resources Engineering.

During the Japanese occupation, the school was called the Industrial University. After Japan surrendered, Indonesia declared its independence. The campus was then renamed the Technical High School.

Later, the Dutch government returned to Indonesia. The campus was renamed the Emergency University of Dutch East Indies. During this time, it became part of the University of Indonesia. It had a Faculty of Engineering and a Faculty of Science.

On March 2, 1959, these two faculties in Bandung became their own separate university. This is when the Bandung Institute of Technology was officially founded. It was created for advanced studies in natural sciences, technology, and fine arts.

In 2020, Reini Djuhraeni Wirahadikusumah became the university's rector. She was the first woman to hold this top position since the institute opened in 1959. In 2025, Tatacipta Dirgantara took over as rector.

ITB's Campuses

ITB has several campuses. Together, they cover a large area of about 770,000 square meters.

Ganesha Campus: The Main Hub

The Ganesha campus is the original and main campus. It has many useful facilities. Besides classrooms and labs, you can find an art gallery, a sports center, a big library, a medical clinic, and areas for student activities.

Jatinangor Campus: Growing Bigger

Because more and more students wanted to join ITB, a second campus was built in Jatinangor. This campus is just as important as the Ganesha campus. Since August 2023, all new students start their first year (called the Joint Preparatory Stage) at the Jatinangor Campus.

Cirebon Campus: Future Plans

ITB is planning to build a new campus in Cirebon. This new campus will be for future research and education. It shows ITB's dedication to helping develop skilled people in Indonesia.

Student Tuition and Support

In January 2024, there was news that ITB was suggesting students use loans to pay for their tuition. This happened after a picture of a pamphlet about monthly tuition payments from a third party was shared online. ITB's Head of Public Relations, Naomi Haswanto, confirmed that ITB works with financial companies to help students pay. She said these companies are approved by Indonesia's financial authority, OJK. She also mentioned that this payment option had been available since August 2023 and that other universities also offered similar plans.

Indonesia's Ministry of Education asked ITB's rector, Reini Wirahadikusumah, to find a good way to help students with tuition. This was to make sure education stays high-quality and available to everyone. The OJK also asked the loan platform for an explanation.

On January 29, 2024, many students marched to the rector's building at the ITB Ganesha campus. They were protesting the idea of paying tuition with online loans. They carried posters against the campus policy, saying it was too much of a burden. Students tried to talk with the rector, but they couldn't meet her. The head of the student cabinet, Muhammad Yogi Syahputra, asked the campus to remove the loan payment option. He also asked for a guarantee that students with payment issues could still register for their classes. The former Governor of West Java, Ridwan Kamil, said that ITB's intention was good. He understood that not all students can easily pay for their studies. He added that payment options should not make things harder for students.

Awards and Recognition

ITB received honors at the Diktiristek Awards 2023 in December 2023. This event is organized by Indonesia's Directorate General of Higher Education, Research, and Technology. ITB won third place in the Digital Economy category. They also received a bronze award for working well with the government and other organizations. This shows ITB's dedication to working with others and improving digital innovation.
