Political Career
Mayor of Bandung
Ridwan Kamil entered politics for the 2013 Bandung mayoral election. He was a new candidate supported by the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) and the Great Indonesia Movement Party (Gerindra). These parties wanted to improve the city.
Bandung had faced some challenges before he ran. Ridwan Kamil was a well-known architect with many achievements. He did not belong to any political party at that time. He won the election with 45% of the votes. This was much more than his closest opponent. He became mayor of Bandung, one of Indonesia's largest cities, at age 42.
Governor of West Java
As a popular mayor, many political parties wanted Ridwan Kamil to run for governor. They wanted him to be a candidate in the 2018 West Java gubernatorial election. He received support from smaller parties, including the United Development Party. This party provided him with a running mate, Uu Ruzhanul Ulum.
Ridwan Kamil knew he was popular in cities, especially around Bandung. However, he was less known in rural areas like Tasikmalaya. He agreed to work with Uu Ruzhanul Ulum, who was popular in those areas. Ridwan Kamil won the election with 33% of the votes. This was four percentage points higher than his closest rival.
His wins in 2013 and 2018 showed that a candidate without a strong party connection could win. This was possible if they were popular and good at communicating. Ridwan Kamil is good at connecting with different groups of people in Indonesia.
During his time as governor, he started a project for Bus Rapid Transit in Bandung. This project aims to combine electric buses, light trains, and cable cars. The goal is to reduce traffic jams in Bandung. The project was planned to start in 2023.
2024 Jakarta Gubernatorial Election

Ridwan Kamil, also known as Kang Emil, announced he would run for Governor of Jakarta. His candidacy was supported by a group of parties called the Advanced Indonesia Coalition. Other parties like PKS, PKB, PPP, and NasDem also supported him.
Kang Emil's decision to run was seen as a smart move. He is very popular from his time as mayor of Bandung and governor of West Java. He successfully served two terms as mayor and one term as governor. He believes in fair competition in elections.
He became a member of the Golkar party in 2021. Golkar recommended him to run for Governor. He received a lot of support from many political groups. He announced that his running mate would be Suswono, a former Minister of Agriculture. They were officially declared as candidates on August 19, 2024.
