Jakarta is a special region in Indonesia. It is like a province but also the country's largest city. Instead of a mayor, Jakarta has a governor who leads the city.
The Governor of Jakarta is a politician chosen by the people. They work with the vice governor and 106 members of the Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD). Together, they make important decisions for the city of Jakarta.

How Jakarta's Government Changed
Jakarta's way of being governed has changed a lot over time. On March 5, 1942, Japan took control of Batavia from the Dutch. They renamed the city Jakarta. It was called the "Jakarta Special City." This name showed its special status.
After Japan lost the war, Indonesia declared its independence on August 17, 1945. The city's government then became the Jakarta National Administration in September 1945. The Dutch name Batavia was still used internationally until Indonesia became fully independent on December 27, 1949. That's when Jakarta officially became the capital of Indonesia.
A law passed in 1974 confirmed Jakarta as Indonesia's capital. It also made Jakarta one of Indonesia's provinces.
How Governors Are Chosen
At first, Jakarta was led by a mayor. This lasted until the end of 1960. Then, the role changed to a governor. Sudiro was the last mayor of Jakarta. He was replaced by Dr. Sumarno, who became the first governor.
In August 2007, Jakarta held its first-ever election for governor. Before this, members of the DPRD chose the governors. This direct election was part of a bigger plan across Indonesia. It allowed people in many areas to vote for their local leaders. Governors and vice governors are elected for a five-year term. They can serve for two terms.
The 2017 Election
The most recent election for governor happened on February 15, 2017. Three pairs of candidates ran for the job. No one won more than half of the votes in the first round. So, a second election was held on April 19, 2017. This was between the top two pairs.
The official results showed that Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno won. They received 57.96% of the votes. They beat Basuki Tjahaja Purnama and Djarot Saiful Hidayat, who got 42.04% of the votes.
