Early Life and Education
Anies Rasyid Baswedan was born on 7 May 1969, in Kuningan, West Java. He is the oldest of three children. His mother, Aliyah Rasyid, was a lecturer, and his father, Rasyid Baswedan, was a vice rector at a university. His family later moved to Yogyakarta.
Anies's paternal grandfather, Abdurrahman Baswedan, was an important activist and diplomat during Indonesia's fight for independence. Anies grew up in Yogyakarta and went to local schools there.
In 1987, he was an exchange student in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, USA, for one year. After returning to Indonesia, he studied business management at Gadjah Mada University. He also spent a summer studying in Tokyo, Japan.
Anies received scholarships to continue his studies in the United States. He earned a master's degree in public policy from the University of Maryland, College Park. Later, he received a PhD in political science from Northern Illinois University.
Academic Career
Paramadina University Rector
On 15 May 2007, Anies became the rector of Paramadina University in Jakarta. A rector is like the head or president of a university. At 38 years old, he was the youngest rector of an Indonesian university at that time.
As rector, Anies started a program called Paramadina Fellowship. He also made anti-corruption education a required part of the university's courses. This was the first time such a course was included in a university's main curriculum in Indonesia.
Indonesia Mengajar
Anies became well-known across Indonesia in 2009 when he created the Indonesia Mengajar (Indonesia Teaching) Foundation. This program helps improve education quality, especially in rural and poorer areas.
The foundation selects and trains university graduates. These graduates then spend one year teaching in different parts of the country. Anies led this program until 2013, when he decided to enter politics.
Political Career
Anies started his political journey as an independent. He helped with important national discussions, like moderating a presidential debate in 2009. He also advised President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono on various issues.
In 2010, Anies helped found Nasdem, a large social organization. He left it when it became a political party.
Joko Widodo Presidential Campaign
Anies joined Joko Widodo's presidential campaign in 2014 as a spokesperson. Many believed his involvement would help gain support from young voters.
After Joko Widodo won the election, Anies was part of the team that prepared for the new government. This team helped set up the cabinet and plan new programs.
Minister of Education and Culture
After President Joko Widodo took office, Anies was appointed Minister of Education and Culture. He started this role on 27 October 2014.
As minister, he made some changes to the national education system. He paused the new 2013 Curriculum, saying the schools were not ready for it. He also changed the National Exam so it would not be the only way to decide if students graduated. Instead, it would be used to check the quality of education in different regions. He also worked to improve teacher skills through special tests and training.
Governor of Jakarta (2017–2022)

Election and Inauguration
On 15 September 2016, Anies was nominated to run for Governor of Jakarta. His running mate was Sandiaga Uno, a businessman. Their campaign slogan was Jakarta Maju Bersama (Jakarta Onward Together).
In the first round of the election on 15 February 2017, Anies received about 40% of the votes. He then went to a second round against the incumbent governor, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. On 19 April 2017, Anies won the election with about 58% of the votes.
He officially became Governor of Jakarta on 16 October 2017.
Tenure
During his time as governor, Anies introduced several new policies and programs for Jakarta.
Jakarta, a very crowded city, also managed to produce some agricultural goods. For the first time, Jakarta exported 19 tons of rice to Saudi Arabia.
In 2017, he addressed traffic issues in the Tanah Abang district. He closed a part of the road to traffic to make space for street vendors. This decision received mixed reactions.
Anies also started a school meal program in 2019. It began by providing meals to 144,000 students in 459 schools.
Housing and Zero Down Payment
One of Anies's campaign promises was to help people in Jakarta own homes with a very low or even zero down payment. This program was called "Zero DP" (Zero Down Payment).
The idea was to make housing more affordable in Jakarta, where homes can be very expensive. The program aimed to help residents buy apartments with special payment plans. By September 2022, over 2,300 housing units had been realized under this program.
Transportation
Improving public transportation was another key promise. Anies launched a program called OK OTrip, which later became Jak Lingko. This system allows passengers to pay one fare to use different types of public transport, like small buses and Transjakarta buses, for a certain period.
In 2019, Transjakarta started testing electric buses. By October 2022, 30 electric buses were launched on four routes. The goal was to have 100 electric buses by the end of that year.
During his governorship, new public transportation systems were also launched in Jakarta. These included the Jakarta MRT (Mass Rapid Transit), Jakarta LRT (Light Rail Transit), and the Soekarno-Hatta Airport Rail Link. These new systems help people travel around Jakarta and to the airport more easily.
COVID-19

In early 2020, when the coronavirus started spreading, Anies took steps to prepare Jakarta. He asked hospitals to look for symptoms of the new virus. He also formed a special team to respond to COVID-19.
To prevent the virus from spreading, he closed schools, offices, and entertainment venues in March 2020. Jakarta was the first province in Indonesia to implement large-scale social restrictions (PSBB). This meant people had to stay home and avoid gatherings.
Public transport services like MRT, LRT, and TransJakarta reduced their operations. Anies also allocated a large budget to fight the pandemic. On 1 December 2020, it was announced that Anies himself tested positive for COVID-19.
2024 Presidential Campaign
Anies Baswedan ran for President of Indonesia in the 2024 election. He formed a group of political parties to support his candidacy.
During his campaign, there were discussions about who would be his running mate (vice-presidential candidate). This led to some changes in his coalition of supporting parties.
Personal Life
Anies Baswedan is married to Fery Farhati Ganis. They got married on 11 May 1996. Fery is a psychology graduate.
They have four children: a daughter named Mutiara Annisa Baswedan, and three sons named Mikail Azizi, Kaisar Hakam, and Ismail Hakim Baswedan.
