Sandiaga Uno's Business Journey
Sandiaga Uno finished his studies at Wichita State University in 1990. He then earned his MBA from George Washington University in 1992. He started his career at Summa Bank in 1990. Later, he worked as an investment manager for MP Group Holding Limited in 1994.
The next year, he joined NTI Resources Ltd in Canada. He became an Executive Vice President there. However, the 1997 financial crisis greatly affected NTI Resources Ltd, and he lost his job.
Starting His Own Companies
In 1997, Sandiaga Uno co-founded PT. Recapital Advisors with a friend from high school, Rosan Roeslani. The next year, he co-founded Saratoga Capital with Edwin Soeryadjaya. Both of these businesses are still successful today.
In 2009, Forbes magazine listed him as the 29th richest person in Indonesia. He continued to expand his businesses. For example, he bought a large share (51%) of Mandala Airlines in May 2011. By 2013, Forbes listed him as the 47th richest person in Indonesia.
In 2016, his name appeared on a list of documents known as the Panama Papers. He stated that he had not avoided taxes or broken any laws.
Sandiaga Uno's Political Career
Sandiaga Uno decided to leave the business world and enter politics in mid-2015. Between April and July 2015, he officially stepped down from his roles in 16 companies under Saratoga and Recapital. He joined the Gerindra party as a vice chairman. Soon, his name was considered for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.
Running for Deputy Governor
Towards the end of 2015, groups of volunteers began to support him. One group was called "Sahabat Sandiaga Uno" (Friends of Sandiaga Uno). He started visiting many places in Jakarta. In early 2016, with his supporters' help, he increased his visits. He sometimes visited up to 7 different places in a single day for six months.
News spread that he might run for office. In August 2016, there was talk of seven political parties forming a large group to support a candidate. However, this did not happen. The ruling PDI-P party decided to support the current governor, Ahok. Other parties like Golkar, Hanura, and Nasdem also supported Ahok.
The Democratic Party, PAN, PKB, and PPP then announced their plan. They decided to nominate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (the son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono) for governor.
The remaining parties, Gerindra and PKS, agreed to stay together. They chose former Education Minister Anies Baswedan as their candidate for governor. Sandiaga Uno became his running mate, meaning he would run for Deputy Governor. Sandiaga said he suggested Baswedan to Prabowo because he thought Baswedan was a good fit for the role.
Becoming Deputy Governor and Minister
Anies Baswedan and Sandiaga Uno won the election. Sandiaga Uno became Deputy Governor on 16 October 2017.
In 2018, he resigned from his position as Deputy Governor. He did this to run as Prabowo Subianto's running mate for the 2019 presidential election. His resignation became official on 18 September 2018.
After Prabowo's campaign in the 2019 election, Sandiaga did not hold a public office for a while. Then, on 22 December 2020, he was appointed as the Minister of Tourism and Creative Economy. He rejoined the Gerindra party after this. However, he later left Gerindra again on 24 April 2023. On 14 June 2023, he joined the PPP.
