In 1994, he became an investment manager at MP Group Holding Limited. The next year, he worked for NTI Resources Ltd in Canada. He was an Executive Vice President there. The 1997 financial crisis greatly affected NTI Resources Ltd. This led to the company closing down, and Sandiaga lost his job.
Starting New Companies
In 1997, Sandiaga Uno co-founded PT. Recapital Advisors. He started this company with a friend from high school, Rosan Roeslani. The next year, he co-founded Saratoga Capital with Edwin Soeryadjaya. Both of these businesses are still successful today.

Political Career
Sandiaga Uno decided to leave the business world in mid-2015. He wanted to enter politics. From April to July 2015, he officially resigned from many positions. These were in 16 companies under Saratoga and Recapital. He joined the Gerindra party as a vice chairman. This was a high-ranking position. His name began to be considered for the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election.
Running for Office
In late 2015, groups of volunteers started to support him. One group was called "Sahabat Sandiaga Uno" (Friends of Sandiaga Uno). He began visiting many places in Jakarta. In early 2016, he increased these visits. With his supporters, he visited up to 7 different places a day. This continued for six months, from February to August 2016.
News spread that he might run for governor. In August 2016, there was talk of seven political parties forming a big group to support a candidate. However, this did not happen. The ruling PDI-P party decided to support the current governor, Ahok. Other parties like Golkar, Hanura, and Nasdem also supported Ahok.
The Democratic Party, PAN, PKB, and PPP then announced their plan. They decided to nominate Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono for governor. He is the son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono.
The remaining parties, Gerindra and PKS, stayed together. They chose former Education Minister Anies Baswedan as their candidate. Sandiaga Uno became his running mate. Sandiaga said he suggested Baswedan to Prabowo. He felt Baswedan was a good fit for the role.
