Saefullah's Early Life and Education
Saefullah was born on 11 February 1964 in Cilincing, North Jakarta. He grew up in an area called Rorotan. He went to elementary school in Bekasi. For middle and high school, he attended public schools in Jakarta. Instead of a regular high school, he went to a special school for teachers.
He continued his studies and earned degrees from Muhammadiyah Teachers' Institute, Jakarta State University, and Padjadjaran University.
Saefullah's Career in Government
After finishing teacher's school in 1982, Saefullah started working as a part-time teacher. In 1984, he became a full-time elementary school teacher in Manggarai, Central Jakarta. He worked hard and became a headmaster after eight years. Six years later, he became a school superintendent.
In 2003, he was promoted to lead the education office in West Jakarta. By 2004, he was in charge of middle school education for all of Jakarta. He was promoted again in 2009 to lead the youth and sports office for Jakarta.
Mayor of Central Jakarta
On 4 November 2010, Saefullah was chosen to be the Mayor of Central Jakarta. During his time as mayor, he helped move street vendors from busy areas like Tanah Abang and Monas. He also became a commissioner for the football club Persija Jakarta in 2013, helping the club during a difficult time.
Regional Secretary of Jakarta
On 11 July 2014, Saefullah was appointed as Jakarta's Regional Secretary. This is the highest-ranking job for a government official in the province. The governor at the time, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama, chose Saefullah for this important role. He believed Saefullah was a good choice because he was younger and had a lot of experience.
In March 2016, Saefullah was chosen to lead the Jakarta branch of Nahdlatul Ulama, a large Islamic organization. He also thought about running for governor in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election. He even got support from a political party, but he did not end up running.
Saefullah briefly served as acting governor of Jakarta for about 40 hours. This happened between the end of Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat's term and the start of Governor Anies Baswedan's term in October 2017. His job as Regional Secretary was extended by Governor Baswedan in July 2019.
Saefullah's Passing
