Central Jakarta (Indonesian: Jakarta Pusat) is one of the five special areas that make up the Special Capital Region of Jakarta. It's like a big neighborhood within the larger city. Even though it's called a "city," it doesn't have its own separate government or city council. It's managed as part of Jakarta.

Central Jakarta is the smallest of these five areas in both size and how many people live there. But it's super important! It's the main center for government and business in both Jakarta and all of Indonesia. You'll find many big international hotels and famous places here, like Hotel Indonesia.

Exploring Central Jakarta's Neighborhoods

Central Jakarta is surrounded by other parts of Jakarta: North Jakarta to the north, East Jakarta to the east, South Jakarta to the south, and West Jakarta to the west.

This area is divided into eight smaller sections called districts (kecamatan). Each district has its own unique feel. Here are the eight districts:

  • Tanah Abang
  • Menteng
  • Senen
  • Johar Baru
  • Cempaka Putih
  • Kemayoran
  • Sawah Besar
  • Gambir

In total, Central Jakarta covers about 48 square kilometers. As of mid-2023, about 1.1 million people live here.

Central Jakarta is a very busy place! In mid-2023, there were almost 23,000 people living in every square kilometer. This makes it the most crowded part of Jakarta. The Johar Baru District is especially packed, with nearly 60,000 people per square kilometer!

Business and Economy

Central Jakarta is a major hub for business. Many companies have their offices here. It's a very important area for Indonesia's economy. You'll find lots of office buildings and business centers. This area is always growing, with new office spaces being built. Many international companies choose to set up their offices in Central Jakarta.

Government and Important Buildings

Central Jakarta is home to many important government offices. For example, the National Search and Rescue Agency has its main office in the Kemayoran district. The National Transportation Safety Committee (NTSC), which investigates accidents, also has its main office here. This shows how Central Jakarta is truly the heart of Indonesia's administration.
