Karlsborg is a town located in Västra Götaland County, Sweden. It is the main town, or "seat," of Karlsborg Municipality. In 2010, about 3,551 people lived here. This special town is known as a garrison town, meaning it has a military base. It sits right on the shore of Lake Vättern in the area called Västergötland.
The Story of Karlsborg
The town of Karlsborg started and grew because of a very important building project. This was the construction of the Karlsborg Fortress. This huge fortress was built during the 1800s.
Why Karlsborg Fortress Was Built
The fortress was part of a special plan called "central defense." This idea meant that if Sweden was ever attacked in a war, the fortress would become the country's "reserve capital." This means it would be a safe place for the government to move to if the main capital, Stockholm, was in danger.
