Karnah is a special administrative area, like a sub-district, located in the Kupwara district of Jammu and Kashmir, India. It's about 78 kilometers (48 miles) away from Kupwara, which is the main town of the district. Karnah is also the largest sub-district in the area by size.
The Sharda Devi Temple
On March 22, 2023, a special temple called Maa Sharda Devi temple was opened in Teetwal, which is part of Karnah. This temple is very close to the Line of Control, a border area. A high-ranking government official, India's Union Home Minister Amit Shah, opened the temple online.
The temple was rebuilt following old religious texts and traditions. This project was guided by Sharada Peeth, a very important center for learning and religion. The opening happened on the first day of Chaitra Navratri, a special Hindu festival.
People and Population
Karnah tehsil is home to many people. According to the 2011 Census, 60,129 people live here. There are more males (34,471) than females (25,658). This means for every 1,000 males, there are about 744 females.
In 2011, there were 11,422 families living in Karnah. Most of the people here are Paharis. About 25.8% of the people live in towns, while 74.2% live in villages.
People in towns tend to be more educated, with about 68.4% able to read and write. In villages, about 59.9% of people are literate. The number of females per 1,000 males is different in towns (587) compared to villages (807).
