Kashim Shettima Mustapha (born on September 2, 1966) is a Nigerian politician. He is currently the 15th Vice President of Nigeria. Before this important role, he was a senator for Borno Central from 2019 to 2023. He also served as the governor of Borno State from 2011 to 2019.
Shettima was born in Maiduguri in 1966. He studied at the University of Maiduguri and the University of Ibadan. After finishing school, he worked in business and banking. He held many important positions in banks. By the mid-2000s, he was a manager at Zenith Bank in Maiduguri. He then left banking to join the government of Governor Ali Modu Sheriff in 2007.
After four years working in the state government, he was elected governor in 2011. He was re-elected in 2015. During his time as governor, he faced challenges from the Boko Haram insurgency. In 2019, Shettima became a senator. In 2022, he became the running mate for Bola Tinubu in the presidential election.

Early Life and Education
Kashim Shettima was born on September 2, 1966, in Maiduguri, which was then part of the Northern Region. His parents were Shettima Mustafa Kuttayibe. He is married to Nana Shettima, and they have three children.
Shettima went to Lamisula Primary School in Maiduguri from 1972 to 1978. He then attended Government Secondary School in Biu, Borno State, from 1978 to 1980. Later, he moved to Government Science Secondary School in Potiskum (now in Yobe State) and finished his secondary education in 1983.
He earned a degree (BSc) in agricultural economics from the University of Maiduguri in 1989. After that, he completed his one-year mandatory service with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) at the Nigerian Agricultural Cooperative Bank in Calabar, Cross River State, from 1989 to 1990. He then got a master's degree (MSc) in Agricultural Economics from the University of Ibadan in 1991. After graduating, Shettima worked as a lecturer at the University of Maiduguri from 1991 to 1993.
Career in Banking
In 1993, Kashim Shettima started working in the banking industry. He joined the Commercial Bank of Africa Limited in Ikeja, Lagos State, as the head of accounts. He worked there until 1997.
In 1997, he moved to the African International Bank Limited. He started as a Deputy Manager and became a Manager in 2001. That same year, he joined Zenith Bank as the head of its main branch in Maiduguri. At Zenith Bank, he moved up to Senior Manager, then Assistant General Manager, and finally Deputy General Manager. He left Zenith Bank as a General Manager in 2007 when he was appointed as a Commissioner in Borno State.
Political Journey
From 2007 to 2011, Shettima served as a state commissioner in five different government ministries in Borno State. In January 2011, Engineer Modu Fannami Gubio was chosen to run for governor. However, Gubio was sadly killed, and Shettima was then chosen as the new candidate in February 2011.
In the election on April 26, 2011, Shettima won with 531,147 votes. The candidate from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Muhammed Goni, received 450,140 votes.
In February 2019, Shettima won the election for the Borno Central Senatorial District. This meant he became a senator, taking over from Senator Babakaka Bashir.
Vice President of Nigeria
On March 1, 2023, Bola Tinubu was announced as the winner of the 2023 Nigerian presidential election. This meant Kashim Shettima became the Vice President-elect of Nigeria.
Shettima officially took office after saying his oath of office on May 29, 2023, at the Eagle Square, Abuja. As the Vice President of Nigeria, his job includes overseeing the economic planning team. He also reports and gives advice to the President, who makes the final decisions.
In June 2024, Shettima spoke at a peace and security meeting in Katsina. He talked about the importance of peace in the region. In September 2024, Shettima gave a speech at the General debate of the seventy-ninth session of the United Nations General Assembly. He spoke on behalf of President Bola Tinubu, focusing on finding a solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
