History of Kashmere Gardens
The city of Houston officially made Kashmere Gardens part of the city in the 1940s.
Between 1990 and 2000, the number of Hispanic residents in Kashmere Gardens grew quite a bit. It went from about 19% of the population to about 31%.
A study showed that from 2000 to 2005, the population of Kashmere Gardens increased by about 10.5% each year.
By 2010, the Harris County Flood Control District started buying houses in the neighborhood. This was done to help reduce the impact of possible floods in the future.

In 2000, the Kashmere Gardens area had about 11,286 people. This meant there were about 2,800 people living in each square mile.
By 2015, the population was about 10,005 people, with around 2,493 people per square mile. In 2018, the average income for households in the area was about $23,000 per year.

The Houston Independent School District runs the public schools in Kashmere Gardens.

St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston used to operate St. Francis of Assisi Catholic School in Kashmere Gardens. It opened in 1955.
The school was badly damaged by Hurricane Harvey in 2017. Even though the community worked hard to help rebuild it, the school closed in 2020. The archdiocese said the closure was due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
McCrane-Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Library
The Houston Public Library had a branch called the McCrane-Kashmere Gardens Neighborhood Library. It was located at 5411 Pardee Street.
This library also closed after Hurricane Harvey caused damage in 2017. By 2020, there were plans to fix up the building and reopen the library, but the COVID-19 pandemic slowed down this process.
