Early Life and First Roles
Kate Jackson was born in Birmingham, Alabama. Her parents were Ruth and Hogan Jackson. She went to The Brooke Hill School for Girls. Later, she studied history at the University of Mississippi. She was part of the Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority there.
She then transferred to Birmingham–Southern College. There, she took classes in speech and theater history. After college, she worked at the Stowe Playhouse in Stowe, Vermont. Then, she moved to New York City to study acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts.
At first, Jackson worked as a tour guide for NBC at Rockefeller Center. She then got a role as Daphne Harridge, a mysterious ghost, on the TV show Dark Shadows. This was a daytime soap opera about supernatural events. In 1971, she starred as Tracy Collins in Night of Dark Shadows. This was a movie based on the TV show.
She later played nurse Jill Danko for four seasons on the crime drama The Rookies. While on the show, Jackson used her free time to study directing and editing. She also appeared in several TV movies. Her acting was praised in the 1972 film Limbo. This movie was one of the first to talk about the Vietnam War and the wives of soldiers who were POWs (prisoners of war) or MIA (missing in action).
Becoming a TV Star
In 1975, Kate Jackson met with producers Aaron Spelling and Leonard Goldberg. They wanted her to star in a new TV series. Goldberg told her about a show called The Alley Cats. Spelling said that Jackson suggested changing the name to "Charlie's Angels." She pointed to a picture of three angels on the wall.
Jackson was first chosen to play Kelly Garrett. But she decided to play Sabrina Duncan instead. The show was a huge hit! Jackson, Jaclyn Smith, and Farrah Fawcett-Majors (who played Jill Munroe) appeared on the cover of Time magazine. The show first aired as a TV movie in March 1976. It then became a regular series in September 1976.
Because Kate Jackson had more experience from The Rookies, she was seen as the main star of Charlie's Angels. Her role as Kelly Garrett was very important in the first TV movie.
In February 1979, Jackson hosted an episode of Saturday Night Live. During her opening speech, she mentioned being an NBC tour guide ten years earlier. At the start of the third season of Charlie's Angels, Jackson was offered a role in the movie Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). But she had to turn it down. The show's filming schedule could not be changed for her to do the movie.
At the end of the third season, Jackson left Charlie's Angels. She said she felt it was time to move on. Shelley Hack took her place on the show.
In 1983, Jackson got a main role in Scarecrow and Mrs. King. This was an action drama where she played Amanda King, a housewife. Her co-star was Bruce Boxleitner, who played a spy. Jackson also helped produce the series. She became interested in directing during this time. Scarecrow and Mrs. King ran for four seasons, from 1983 to 1987.
During the fourth season of the show, in January 1987, Jackson found a small tumor. She had a surgery called a lumpectomy. She returned to the show a week later and continued working while getting treatments.
After her treatment, Jackson starred in Baby Boom. This was a TV comedy series based on a 1987 movie. The series lasted less than one season. In 1989, Jackson starred in the movie Loverboy.
In September 1989, another check-up showed some remaining issues. Jackson had another surgery and reconstructive surgery. Her Charlie's Angels co-star Jaclyn Smith supported her during this time.
In 1995, doctors found that Jackson was born with a heart condition. She had open-heart surgery to fix it.
Jackson has spoken publicly about breast health and heart health. In 2003, she received the "Power of Love" award from the American Heart Association. This was for helping people learn more about these health issues.
In 2004, a TV movie called Behind the Camera: The Unauthorized Story of Charlie's Angels aired. Actress Lauren Stamile played Kate Jackson in it. In August 2006, Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, and Jaclyn Smith appeared together at the 58th Primetime Emmy Awards. They were honoring Aaron Spelling, who created Charlie's Angels.
In 2007, Jackson played the mother of an FBI agent on Criminal Minds. This was her last acting role for a while. In August 2008, she was a guest judge on Jaclyn Smith's reality show Shear Genius. They had a competition to update the original Angels' hairstyles.
In 2010, it was announced that Jackson would publish her life story. The book has been delayed several times. She has not appeared in movies or TV since 2009.
Personal Life
Kate Jackson lived with actor Edward Albert in the mid-1970s. She was also linked to other famous people. In August 1978, she married actor Andrew Stevens. They divorced in 1981.
She then married businessman David Greenwald in 1982. They started a production company together called 'Shoot The Moon Productions'. This company produced Jackson's series Scarecrow and Mrs. King. They divorced in 1984.
