Early Life and Education
Ofunne Kate Osamor was born in North London and grew up in the Haringey area. She was one of four children. Her mother, Martha Osamor, is also a politician.
Kate Osamor went to Creighton Comprehensive School. Later, she studied Third World Studies at the University of East London. While at university, she was diagnosed with dyslexia, a learning difficulty that can make reading and writing challenging.
Before becoming a politician, she worked for The Big Issue newspaper. She also spent many years working for the NHS, which provides healthcare in England. In 2014, she was elected to a leadership committee in the Labour Party.
Political Career
In 2015, Kate Osamor was elected as the Member of Parliament for Edmonton. She won with a large number of votes.
First Term in Parliament (2015–2017)
After her election, Osamor supported Jeremy Corbyn in the Labour Party's leadership election. She was soon given important roles. In September 2015, she became a Parliamentary Private Secretary to Corbyn. This job involves helping the party leader stay connected with other MPs.
In January 2016, she was appointed as the Shadow Minister for Women and Equalities. A shadow minister's job is to look closely at the work of the government minister with the same role.
A few months later, in June 2016, she was promoted to Shadow Secretary of State for International Development. In this role, she argued that international aid should be used to help reduce inequality and poverty, especially for women's groups.
Second Term (2017–2019)
Osamor was re-elected in the 2017 general election with an even larger majority. After her win, some people noticed that parts of her victory speech were very similar to a famous speech by former U.S. President Barack Obama. Osamor explained that she did this on purpose because the speech was so well-known.
In 2018, Osamor resigned from her Shadow Cabinet position to spend more time with her family.
Parliamentary Investigation
In November 2018, an investigation began into Osamor's actions. The investigation looked at her use of official House of Commons paper and a disagreement she had with a journalist.
In March 2020, the investigation found that she had broken parliamentary rules. She was asked to write an apology for her actions. Osamor accepted that she had broken the rules and apologized.
Third Term (2019–2024)
Osamor was re-elected in the 2019 general election.
In January 2024, Osamor was temporarily suspended from the Labour Party. This was because of comments she made in her weekly newsletter about Holocaust Memorial Day. She suggested that other genocides should also be remembered on that day. Her suspension was lifted in May 2024, and she rejoined the party's MPs.
Fourth Term (2024–Present)
Due to changes in constituency boundaries, the Edmonton area she represented was changed. In the 2024 general election, Osamor was elected as the MP for the new constituency of Edmonton and Winchmore Hill.
Personal Life
Osamor has one son, Ishmael, who was born in 1989. He has also been involved in local politics, serving as a councillor in Haringey Council.
Her mother, Martha Osamor, is a well-known Labour activist. In 2018, she was appointed to the House of Lords, which is the second chamber of the UK Parliament.
