Early Life and Education

Kate Williams was born in 1985 in Detroit. Her parents were also from Detroit. She went to Michigan State University to study food science. Later, she earned a cooking degree from the French Culinary Institute.

Her Journey as a Chef

Kate Williams worked as a sous chef for famous chef Wolfgang Puck in Chicago. She also gained experience in restaurants in New York. She even worked at Restaurant Relæ in Copenhagen, Denmark.

While working in New York, she visited Detroit for a family event. She realized she wanted to open her own restaurant there. So, she moved back to Detroit. She helped open Republic Tavern and Parks & Rec Diner. She was the head chef for Republic and Rodin before starting her own place, Lady of the House.

Lady of the House Restaurant

Lady of the House opened in September 2017. It was in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. The building used to be an Irish pub. The restaurant served dinner from Tuesday to Sunday. It also offered brunch on Saturdays and Sundays starting in February 2018.

Some of the plates and dishes used in the restaurant belonged to Kate's grandmother. There were also childhood photos of the restaurant's staff hanging in a hallway. This made the place feel very personal and welcoming.

Food + Wine magazine noted that Lady of the House was a "no-waste kitchen." This means Kate tried to use every part of her ingredients. For example, she used leftover pieces from prime rib to make another dish called tartare.

Sometimes, customers would be surprised if a dish they wanted was not available. This was because Kate's menu changed with the seasons. She used fresh, local ingredients. One of her special dishes was a "carrot steak." It was a large carrot sliced very thin, rolled up, and cooked in butter. This dish was only available when big carrots were in season from local farms.
