Kate Williams is a talented chef and restaurant owner from Detroit, Michigan, USA. She was the chef and owner of a popular restaurant called Lady of the House, located in Detroit's Corktown area. In 2018, she was recognized as one of America's best new chefs by Food + Wine magazine. Her restaurant, Lady of the House, was also named one of the best new restaurants by GQ and Esquire. Sadly, Lady of the House closed in 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Early Life and Education

Kate Williams was born in 1985 in Detroit, just like her parents. She went to Michigan State University to study food science, which is about how food is made and prepared. Later, she earned a special cooking degree from the French Culinary Institute. This helped her learn many important skills for becoming a chef.

Kate's Culinary Journey

Kate Williams started her cooking career working in different cities. She was a sous chef, which is like a second-in-command chef, for the famous chef Wolfgang Puck in Chicago. She also worked in restaurants in New York and even in Copenhagen, Denmark.

While working in New York, Kate visited Detroit for a family event. She realized then that she really wanted to open her own restaurant in her hometown. So, she moved back to Detroit. She helped open other restaurants like Republic Tavern and Parks & Rec Diner. She was the head chef for Republic and Rodin before she finally opened her own place, Lady of the House.

Lady of the House Restaurant

Lady of the House opened its doors in September 2017 in Detroit's Corktown neighborhood. The building used to be an Irish pub. The restaurant was open for dinner most evenings and later started serving brunch on weekends.

Kate wanted her restaurant to feel like it had always been there. She also wanted it to be small enough so she could cook every day, not just do paperwork. Some of the dishes at the restaurant were even served on plates that belonged to Kate's grandmother, making it feel very personal.

Cooking with Care

Food + Wine magazine noted that Lady of the House was a "no-waste kitchen." This means Kate tried to use every part of the food to avoid throwing things away. For example, she would use leftover pieces from prime rib to make another dish called tartare.

Kate's menu often changed with the seasons, using fresh ingredients from local farmers. This meant that sometimes a dish people read about might not be available. One of her special dishes was a "carrot steak." It was made from a large carrot, sliced very thin, rolled up, and cooked in butter. This dish was only available when big carrots were in season.

Restaurant Closure

Sadly, Lady of the House closed in 2021. This happened during the COVID-19 pandemic, which caused many restaurants to close down.

Awards and Recognition

In 2018, Kate Williams was named one of America's best new chefs by Food + Wine magazine. She was one of only three chefs from Michigan to ever receive this honor. In the same year, her restaurant, Lady of the House, was listed among the best new restaurants by GQ and Esquire magazines. It was also a semifinalist for a James Beard Foundation Award for best new restaurant in the country.

In 2019, Kate was again a semifinalist for a James Beard Foundation Award, this time for best chef in the Great Lakes area.

Many food critics praised her work. Restaurant Hospitality magazine called her a great example of Detroit's growing food scene. The Chicago Tribune said her food showed "pure mastery," meaning she was incredibly skilled. The New York Times described her food as "seasonal-voluptuous," highlighting its rich flavors and use of fresh, seasonal ingredients.

Giving Back to the Community

Kate Williams also works with a group called Alternatives for Girls. This organization helps young women and girls who are homeless or facing difficulties. Kate teaches them how to cook healthy and affordable meals.

Personal Life

Kate Williams has lived in Corktown, Detroit, since 2014. Her family has strong ties to the area. Her grandfather on her father's side once lived very close to where her restaurant was located. Her grandparents on her mother's side even met at the Gaelic League, which is just around the corner. Her great-great-grandfather also ran a bakery in Detroit's West Village neighborhood.
