Katherine Tupper Hooper was born on June 17, 1851, in Biddeford, Maine. When she was 36 years old, her husband, Harry Lawson Prescott, passed away. After this, she and her three children moved to Boston.
In Boston, Katherine began to study sculpture. She also learned from a well-known sculptor named Francis Edwin Elwell in New York. Katherine was a member of important art groups like the Copley Society of Art and the Boston Art Students Association.
Showing Her Art
Katherine Prescott showed her sculptures at a very big event called the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. This was a huge world's fair! Her art was displayed in the Palace of Fine Arts and also in The Woman's Building.
After her success at the Exposition, she continued to show her work. She exhibited at places like the Boston Art Club, the National Academy of Design in New York, and the Art Institute of Chicago. Her art was also seen at the National Sculpture Society and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts.
