Kathleen is an abandoned town in Western Australia. It is located along the Goldfields Highway. You can find it between the towns of Leinster and Wiluna. This area is part of the Goldfields-Esperance region.
Kathleen: A Gold Rush Town
Kathleen became a town because of gold! In 1897, people found gold in the area. At first, they called the place Kathleen Valley. This was because the gold was found in a valley nearby.
How Kathleen Started
The town was officially named Kathleen in 1900. The "Valley" part of the name was dropped. This made it simpler.
Life in Early Kathleen
Life in Kathleen quickly grew. By 1901, a shop and a butcher's store opened. This meant people could buy food and supplies. Just one year later, in 1902, the town had two hotels. This shows that many people lived and worked there. One important mine in Kathleen was called the Yellow Aster mine.
