Katiya (Maithili: कटिया) is a very special and traditional dish from Nepal. It's a type of mutton curry that is cooked in a unique way. Imagine a delicious meat stew made right inside a clay pot! This cooking method gives Katiya its amazing flavor.

What is Katiya?

Katiya is a tasty meat dish, usually made with mutton, which is meat from a sheep. What makes it super unique is how it's cooked. Instead of a regular pot on a stove, Katiya is prepared in a special earthen pot, also known as a clay pot. This pot is then placed over hot coals, like a mini outdoor oven.

Where Does Katiya Come From?

This special dish comes from the Maithil community in Nepal. The Maithil people have a rich culture and their own language, Maithili language. Katiya actually started in a town called Katahariya, which is in the Rautahat district of Nepal. It's a very old recipe passed down through generations.

Even though it started with the Maithil community, Katiya is also loved by other groups of people in the Terai region of Nepal. These include the Rajbanshi, Bhojpuri, and Tharu people. It shows how food can bring different communities together!

How is Katiya Made?

Making Katiya is a bit like a cooking adventure! First, the mutton is mixed with lots of yummy spices. This includes chilies for a little kick, garlic, and onion. These ingredients give the meat a wonderful flavor.

Next, salt, turmeric (a yellow spice), and oil are added to the special earthen pot. Then, the spiced mutton goes into the pot. The pot is sealed or covered well. After that, the magic happens! The entire earthen pot is placed inside a bed of hot coals. It cooks slowly for about half an hour. This slow cooking in clay makes the meat super tender and full of flavor.

When it's ready, Katiya is often served with warm rice, soft chapati (a type of flatbread), or bhooja (puffed rice). It's a hearty and delicious meal that many people enjoy in Nepal.
