Maithili (Nepali: मैथिली; Maithilī) is a language spoken in parts of Nepal and northern India. It belongs to the Indo-Aryan language family. This means it's related to languages like Hindi and Bengali.
About 34.7 million people speak Maithili. Most of them live in India, but around 2.8 million speakers are in Nepal. It is the second most important national language in Nepal.
The Maithili Script
Long ago, Maithili was written using a special script called Mithilakshar. This script is also known as Tirhuta. It has a unique look and history.
Today, most people write Maithili using the Devanagari script. This is the same script used for Hindi and Nepali. It makes it easier for people to read and write Maithili.
