Kaulahea I was an important leader in ancient Hawaii, born around the year 1485. He was the 10th known King of Maui, meaning he was the powerful High Chief of the Hawaiian island of Maui. We know about him from old Hawaiian stories and chants that have been passed down through generations.
About Kaulahea I
Kaulahea I was a respected ruler of Maui. He is remembered for a time of peace on the island. During his rule, there were no wars between Maui and other islands. This was quite different from some other times in Maui's history, like during the rule of Kamaloohua, when there were more conflicts.
A famous Hawaiian historian named Samuel Kamakau wrote that Kaulahea was born at a special place called the Kukaniloko Birth Site. This site was important for the birth of high-ranking chiefs.
His Family
Kaulahea I came from a family of important chiefs. His father was Kahokuohua, who was the High Chief of the island of Molokaʻi. His mother was a chiefess named Hikakaiula.
Kaulahea's grandfather was Loe, who was also a King of Maui. Kaulahea I became the ruler of Maui after his grandfather.
He married Princess Kapohanaupuni, who came from Hilo. Together, they had two sons named Kakae and Kakaalaneo. After Kaulahea I, his two sons ruled Maui together as kings.
Later, another chief named Kaulahea II was given the same name, showing the importance of Kaulahea I's legacy. Kaulahea I also had a famous grandson, Prince Kaululaʻau.
