Kakae was a powerful chief of the island of Maui. His name is sometimes also written as Kakaeloiki. People remember Kakae because he is mentioned in many old Hawaiian chants and stories.

About Kakae

Kakae was the son of Kaulahea I, who was a High Chief of Maui. His mother was Chiefess Kapohanaupuni from Hilo. Kakae had a brother named Kakaalaneo.

Ruling Maui

Kakae and his brother, Kakaalaneo, ruled the islands of Maui and Lanai together. Their royal courts were located in a place called Lahaina. Back then, Lahaina was known by its older name, Lele.

Kakae's Family

Kakae's wife was named Kapohauola. They had one son, who was named Kahekili I.

After Kakae, his brother Kakaalaneo became the next Moʻi, or ruler. But when Kakaalaneo passed away, Kakae's son, Kahekili I, became the next chief of Maui. He took over the rule instead of Kakaalaneo's own children.
