Meet Kahekili I, an important king who ruled the island of Maui long ago. He was known as a strong warrior and a powerful chief. However, his many wars almost ruined his kingdom. People sometimes called him Kahekilinui, meaning 'Kahekili the Great'. But his grandson, Kahekili II, became even more famous. His name, Kahekili, came from Kāne-Hekili, the Hawaiian god of thunder.
The Life of King Kahekili I
Kahekili I was the son of Kakae, a ruler of Maui, and High Chiefess Kapohauola. He became the ruler of Maui after his uncle, Kakaalaneo, passed away.
His Rule and Challenges
King Kahekili I was known for leading many war campaigns. These wars were very expensive. They caused his kingdom and people to become quite poor. It seemed that many 13th rulers, or Moʻi, on each of the four main Hawaiian islands faced similar challenges during their time.
Kahekili's Family Life
Kahekili I married a woman named Haukanuimakamaka, also known as Haukanimaka, from the island of Kauai. They had two children together.
Their son was named Kawao Kaohele. His name means "Our-Days-of-Poverty." This name was chosen to remember how poor the kingdom became because of his father's many wars.
They also had a beautiful daughter named Keleanohoanaapiapi.
After Kahekili I, his son Kawao Kaohele became the next ruler of Maui. His daughter, Keleanohoanaapiapi, married into the royal family of Oahu.
