Keleanohoanaapiapi, often called Kelea for short, was an important noblewoman from ancient Hawaii. Her story is found in old legends and family songs. She was a Princess, or Aliʻi, of Maui, one of the beautiful Hawaiian Islands. Kelea was a powerful chiefess, though not the highest in rank. Some stories about her are even compared to the famous myth of Helen of Troy.

Kelea's Family

Keleanohoanaapiapi was the daughter of High Chief Kahekili I the Great. Her mother was Lady Haukanuimakamaka from Kauai. This made her the sister of Chief Kawaokaohele. Her grandmother on her father's side was Queen Kapohauola.

Her Life and Marriages

Keleanohoanaapiapi was most likely born on the island of Maui. She was known for her great beauty. She became the wife of the handsome Prince Lo Lale of Oahu. Prince Lo Lale was the brother of King Piliwale. Kelea and Lo Lale had three children together. Later, they decided to divorce.

After her first marriage, Keleanohoanaapiapi married another noble named Kalamakua. Their daughter was Queen La’ieloheloheikawai. She later became the wife of King Piʻilani of Maui.
