Kawaokaohele (Hawaiian for "our days of poverty") was an important leader, known as a High Chief, who ruled the island of Maui a long time ago in ancient Hawaii. Even though his name means "our days of poverty," his time as ruler was actually very successful and peaceful for his people.

About Kawaokaohele

His Family

Kawaokaohele was the son of King Kahekili I and Chiefess Haukanuimakamaka. His mother was also known as Hauanuihonialawahine. She was born on Kauai, another Hawaiian island, but she married his father on Maui.

He had a brother named Peʻapeʻa Makawalu I. Kawaokaohele was also the grandson of King Kakae and his wife Kapohauola.

His Time as King

Kawaokaohele became the king of Maui after his father, King Kahekili I. His time as king was very good for the island.

During Kawaokaohele's rule, there were no wars on Maui. This made his reign a time of peace and growth for the island.

His sister, Princess Keleanohoanaapiapi, was known for her beauty. She later married into a noble family from the island of Oahu.

His Marriage

Kawaokaohele married a woman named Kepalaoa. We don't know much about her family, but she was likely a chiefess from Maui or a princess from Oahu. Kawaokaohele and Kepalaoa had a famous son named King Piʻilani. Piʻilani later became king after Kawaokaohele.

An Old Legend

In one old Hawaiian story, Kawaokaohele is shown as the foster father of Piʻilani.

According to this legend, the god Kū was actually Piʻilani's birth father. This shows how important and respected Kawaokaohele was, even in ancient myths.
