Kapohauola was a very important leader, known as a High Chiefess, in ancient Hawaii. She was a Chiefess on the Hawaiʻi island and also a Queen of Maui. People sometimes called her Kualua in old stories. Her name is found in ancient legends and in books like Tales and Traditions of the People of Old by Samuel Kamakau.
Kapohauola's Life
Kapohauola was born around the year 1503. Her parents were King Kahokuohua and his wife Hiʻikawaiula. She was also the sister of Princess Kapohanaupuni from Hilo.
She married her nephew, Kakae, who was the King of Maui. Their son was a famous ruler named Kahekili I. He was also known as "Kahekili the Great." He was known for leading many war campaigns during his time.
Kapohauola was also the grandmother of two important people. One was the beautiful Princess Keleanohoanaapiapi, who is the main character in an old Hawaiian chant. The other was Kawaokaohele, who later became a King of Maui.
Kapohauola also married another High Chief named ʻEhu. He was the son of King Kuaiwa. With ʻEhu, she had a son named ʻEhunuikaimalino. ʻEhunuikaimalino became a Chief in Kona when Kauholanuimahu was ruling. He married two women, Keana and Opaʻekalani, and had a child named Paula.
